Assistant Professor in Criminology, School of Sociology and Social Policy

Email: James.Heydon@nottingham.ac.uk

Bio: Dr James Heydon's current research seeks to address the problem of air pollution from wood burning stoves. This is a largely socially acceptable behaviour, so this research looks at how to make it less acceptable through a variety of regulatory measures. Other projects are related to environmental justice, with focuses on the oil industry and the ways it has bypassed indigenous human rights with support from the state.

James has consulted with four South Yorkshire councils in the design and implementation of initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution around schools. He also designed and introduced the UK's first monitoring system tasked with reducing the emissions from wood burning stoves. This project has major implications for policy on the use of wood-burning stoves as it demonstrates significant effects on both health and environment.

Description
Dr James Heydon explains why we need to urgently rethink our use of wood burning stoves in the UK, for both the environment and our own health.

SHORT: Government's role in promoting wood burning stove emissions

Description
Based on an analysis of over 18,000 government records of heating and cooking appliances exempt from smoke control rules, and interviews with air pollution officers from local councils across the UK, the research shows how the Deregulation Act 2015 opened the door to a market of stoves exempt from urban air pollution controls (see graph).
