Honorary Degrees

The University of Nottingham awards a number of Honorary Degrees each year at graduation ceremonies both in the UK and at our campuses in China and Malaysia.  The awards are to recognise outstanding contribution, success and distinction.

Nominations for Honorary Degrees are welcome from all members of the University community: students, staff, alumni, members of honorary staff and external members of Council and other Committees.  Nominations may be submitted at any time of year and will be considered at the next meeting of the Honorary Degrees Committee.  Please note that an individual may not nominate themselves for consideration of an Honorary Degree.

The Honorary Degrees Committee normally meets in the Autumn and Spring of each session. The terms of reference for the Committee can be found herePLEASE NOTE: The next meeting of the Honorary Degrees Committee will take place on Thursday 15 July 2021. The deadline for nominations to be considered at this meeting is Thursday 17 June 2021.

The guidance on Honorary Degrees sets out some criteria to be considered when making a nomination.  The Honorary Degrees Committee is extremely keen to ensure a diverse range of nominations.  In addition, the University is looking at a new approach to honorary graduates in terms of stewardship and engagement.  We are keen to ensure that we routinely sustain a continuing or future relationship and nominators should, therefore, set out who will be responsible for maintaining an ongoing relationship when submitting a nomination.

Members of the Committee may have little or no prior knowledge of individuals who are proposed and, in order to assist their deliberations, it is important to provide relevant details of the nominee.  Therefore basic information about the nominee and their suitability for an award should be provided on the nomination form.  This will be of great assistance to the Committee in deciding upon appropriate recipients.

A completed nomination form is required for all nominations and this should be sent by email to (for the attention of Lindsey Jones).

Feedback on Nominations

Unfortunately it is not normally possible for the Committee to provide feedback on the progress of particular nominations but this can be arranged if specifically required.

The recipient should be unaware of the proposal.  The conferment will not be made public until the Council and Senate of the University of Nottingham have been informed and that the utmost confidentiality should be maintained until that point.
