Bike to Uni Week

Bike Week

14th – 22nd June 2014

Bikes-at-Uni

Bike Week is the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK. It aims to encourage over half a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

As part of the Bike Week, The University Of Nottingham is holding Bike to Uni Week with lots of fun events and activities.

Are you going to cycle during Bike to Uni Week?

If yes, we'd like to encourage you to donate the saving you are making from the cost of your commute to children's brain tumour research at the University. It's really simple to donate, all you need to do is visit http://www.justgiving.com/BiketoUniWeek to make your payment at the end of the week.

Calculating the cost of your weekly bus/train fare is easy. For a little help calculating your fuel costs visit: http://journeyprice.co.uk.

Brain tumours are the largest cause of children's cancer deaths, yet only 2% of cancer research funding has been focused on this area. Real progress is being made in diagnosing earlier and improving survival rates but there is so much more that our leading edge researchers want to do, and your donation will be gratefully received.

If you enjoyed riding your bike, why not join in on one of the Lifecycle 4 Rides in August of this year.

Bikers Breakfast

As reward for cycling into the University, every morning during the Bike to Uni Week cyclists will be able to claim a croissant and a hot drink voucher valid at a university café. The vouchers and pastries will be handed out across all four campuses on different days throughout the week (see table). These will be valid only on the same day and will be valued up to £2. The vouchers are available on a “first come first serve basis”, so pedal quickly!

Cycle Stalls and Drop In Sessions

Thinking about getting into cycling, but not sure where to start? Why not pay a visit to the information stand and drop in sessions. You will have a chance to come and see the Sustrans Project Officer. You will be able to have a chat, gain guidance on basic bike maintenance and obtain advice about how to get out on your bike (locations and times).

Lunch Time Rides

Every lunch time during Bike to Uni Week there will be a different guided ride which allows riders to see a different side to their campus via a quick 30-45 minute bike ride. These rides will start at 12:30pm from the locations stated below (table).

No bike…………no worries. You will be able to try a rental bike for free and join in the ride (please arrive early if you want to use a rental bike).

A week in the life of a new cyclist

Do you want to ride a bike for a week? Five people will be given the chance to rent a Ucycle bike for a week for free! All we ask in return, is that you tell us how you used your bike (this can be in any form of media. We just want to know how you got on! We will be posting your thoughts, photos and comments on our social media sites).

Did you have fun? Has it made you think about getting a bike? Did you have a smug sense of satisfaction when you cycled past all the traffic?

To register your interest in a free bike please email your height details to: sustainability@nottingham.ac.uk

Bike Week Bike Bus (Friday 20th June, 5-6pm, Trent East car-park)

We are calling on the staff and students of The University of Nottingham to finish the national bike week in style. We want you to join in on our fun, easy going and alternative method of getting home on a Friday night, the 3rd monthly Friday Night Bike Bus! This is a bike convoy that travels through the main residential areas of Nottingham from the Trent Building visitor car park (starting at 5pm) via fun, interesting and quiet routes and finishes at the Castle (Approx 6pm).

All routes will be easy, quiet and open to all abilities (if you can ride a bike you can jump on the bus). Cycling passengers can then jump on and off the bus when and where they please. We need you to make an effort, join in the fun and try to make this as big as possible!
