Access to Learning Fund (ALF)
If you are already claiming all the support you are eligible for from the Government, including your student loan, but are still struggling to make ends meet you should apply to the ALF.
The ALF provides discretionary financial assistance for 'home' full-time and part-time students, to help them access and remain in higher education. Students who may be considering leaving University because of financial problems are particularly encouraged to apply. You can apply at any point in the academic year including the summer vacation. Awards are usually grants (ie you don't have to repay them).
A 'home' student is a person who meets certain UK residency criteria. The same conditions apply to eligibility for student finance from the Student Loans Company. Overseas students are not eligible to apply to the ALF; EU students may be able to apply depending on certain criteria. The Funding for EU students page has more information.
Priority students who may particularly benefit are:
-
final year students
-
students with children (especially lone parents)
-
mature students, especially those with existing financial commitments, including priority debts
-
students from low-income families
-
disabled students
-
care leavers or students from Foyers background
Application forms can be downloaded
or picked up at any of the Student Services Centres.
If you do not receive UK Government funding, but are classed as a 'home' student please complete the Declaration of Residency
form as well as the application form.
Childcare Support Scheme
The Childcare Support Scheme is a small fund set up by the University to offer eligible students (including international students) some financial assistance towards meeting the costs of essential registered child care whilst they are studying. As the funds are limited, the University adopts a selective approach to the allocation of awards to ensure that it is those students who most need assistance, who benefit from the scheme. Payments will be made in accordance with the criteria agreed annually by the Financial Support Funds Committee.
For the 2011/2012 academic year applications will be accepted from 1st October 2011.
Application forms can be downloaded from here
or picked up at any of the Student Services Centres.
Student Crisis Fund
The Student Crisis Fund was established by the University to provide small, interest free loans to students who are experiencing financial difficulties because of an unexpected change in their circumstances after admission to the University. In very exceptional circumstances small, non-repayable grants may be made. The size of the fund means that is impossible to offer support to students for ongoing maintenance costs. All students registered and attending a course at the University of Nottingham in the UK may apply to the fund.
Application forms are available from any of the Student Services Centre or by telephoning the Financial Support Team on 0115 82 32071. In some instances you may be asked to attend an interview in connection with your application and/or to provide further written information and documentary evidence. International students should contact the International Office Support Service staff in the first instance on +44 (0) 115 951 5247.
