On 26 January 2023, the Association of African Universities (AAU), Africa's apex higher education organisation and the University of Nottingham signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) whose main aim was to establish the AAU Europe Regional Office (ERO) at the University of Nottingham.

The AAU has headquarters in Accra, Ghana, and currently has over 400 universities on the continent as its current members.

Vision

As an arm of the AAU, ERO seeks to promote the quality of higher education in Africa through strategic collaborations across Africa and Europe that can enhance Africa’s capacity to contribute to knowledge creation/production and distribution. AAU ERO will adopt a decolonial approach to all its activities.

About the Association of African Universities Europe Regional Office (AAU-ERO)

The Association of African Universities (AAU), Africa’s apex higher education organisation whose mission is “to enhance the quality and relevance of higher education in Africa and strengthen its contribution to Africa’s development" is a 56-year-old organisation established on 12 November 1967 in Morocco. It currently has a membership of 430 Higher Education Institutions in 48 African countries and its Secretariat is based in Accra, Ghana.

The AAU has adopted the strategy of establishing regional offices around the world to help it to respond to its mandate and vision of improving higher education quality as recommended by the AU Agenda 2063. To this end the AAU-ERO was established. On 26 January 2023, the AAU and the University of Nottingham (UoN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) whose main aim was to establish and run the AAU Europe Regional Office (ERO) at UoN.
