Course Details

Our presessional courses are offered for study face-to-to-face here in Nottingham or as online distance learning courses. Please ensure you choose the correct mode of delivery when applying, as once you start a course, you will have to continue following the same mode of study and cannot change mid-way through (unless there are extenuating circumstances).

Online courses

Students taking an online course will not need to travel to the UK. The online presessional courses cover all the academic content and skills offered in our face-to-face courses. They provide tutor support in the form of synchronous teaching and opportunities for peer assisted learning. The courses will include a mix of:

  • online delivery, where you will work in small groups with your tutor and fellow students on MS Teams
  • independent study

Please note that for online courses in Term 4, teaching and assessments will finish in August and you will receive your results on 27 August 2021. Upon successful completion of the course, we will issue your CAS to give you time to apply for your visa if you are coming to the UK to start your degree in September.

In the event that the numbers recruited to the course are low, we may not be able to run it. If this happens, we will inform you at the earliest opportunity.

Some of our CELE students that have been studying online in 2020 have filmed short videos about their experience. and our CELE tutors have more information about the courses and specifically studying them through distance learning. Please click to view our studying online videos

6-week face-to-face course

Although we currently intend to include an element of face-to-face teaching in the delivery of this blended course once the government allows it, whether this will go ahead or not will depend on, amongst other things, any Covid-19 restrictions and government advice in place at the time. Our students' health and safety is our top priority. If face-to-face teaching is not possible on this course, we will inform students at the earliest opportunity.

The course may therefore include a mix of:

  • face-to-face teaching with social distancing - smaller groups and delivered in line with advice on preventing transmission of Covid-19
  • online delivery, where you will work in small groups with your tutor and fellow students on MS Teams
  • independent study

Alternative qualifications

If you are unable to take an IELTS test while coronavirus restrictions are in place, we will accept alternative qualifications for entry to presessional English courses starting in April, June, July and August 2021.

Please note that if you study on campus in Nottingham, you must have a SELT recognised qualification to be eligible to apply for a visa to enter the UK.

If you are studying your presessional course online, we will accept non-SELT recognised qualifications. You will not be issued with a CAS until you have successfully completed your CELE course and you cannot therefore apply for a visa or make travel arrangements until your CAS is issued.
