Event details
This event is a national conference exploring best practice in arts and culture engaging a wide range of communities and groups, including those who have not always had the opportunity to take part.
It will cover both young people and wider communities.
It will showcase the impact arts and culture have in:
- transforming places and lives;
- improving wellbeing;
- tackling difficult issues;
- working in challenging settings; and
- broadening opportunities to engage with excellent art and culture.
The conference will be organised around the following themes featuring key practitioners and organisations:
- Cormac Russell from the international organisation Nurture Development will speak about 'Asset Based Community Development approaches in Arts and Culture', including the role of the artist in supporting citizens to build alternative futures;
- Saad Eddine Said from New Art Exchange in Nottingham and Sara Wajid from Birmingham Museums will talk about their citizens juries;
- Grace Bower from Rotherham will share how young people’s voices have been central to both the concept and the delivery of the new 'Children’s Capital of Culture'.
- Sophie Eustace from Creative Playground in Crawley will share their innovative approach to community decision making;
- Zest Theatre in Lincoln, The Warren in Hull, Blaze in Lancashire, and The Music Works in Gloucester will discuss the role of arts and culture in improving young people’s mental health;
- Fiona Whelan, Rialto Youth Project, Heart of Glass and collaborators will discuss a long-term cultural project taking place in Liverpool City Region and Ireland exploring masculinity and its impact on society. Among other things, this will include how boys and men are shaped by and influence the world they live in.
- Rachel Conlon of York St John University, Kate Pakenham and Film Director Phyllida Lloyd from KPPL Productions in partnership with a women’s prison in Yorkshire will share details of their transformative work;
- Threescore Dance from Brighton and David Cutler from The Baring Foundation will discuss the role of arts and culture in supporting creative ageing – ensuring older people from all backgrounds are not excluded from arts and culture;
- Arts and cultural organisations in Blackpool, Burnley and Stoke will share their experiences of working alongside local communities to co-create and repurpose local spaces into unusual and inspiring cultural venues – including launderettes and barges.
- Selected local and national organisations including the National Gallery and the Creative People and Places Programme will speak about the nature and value of their collaborative partnerships.
