Claude Hobby-Limon - Leader in Focus
First year BSc Sport and Exercise student Claude Hobby-Limon has been volunteering with the Active Row programme since she joined the University of Nottingham earlier this year.
Delivered in partnership with London Youth Rowing, Active Row aims to develop young people through physical activity and open access to rowing at all levels. The programme enables disadvantaged young people to be active and improve their physical, social and mental wellbeing, and develop crucial life skills which are necessary for success in the classroom and workplace.
This term, 14 University of Nottingham student leaders, including Claude, have been volunteering on the Active Row programme delivering over 150 hours of activities to four local Nottingham schools.
What motivated you to get involved with the Volunteering and Leadership Academy?
I wanted to give back to a sport that has had a major impact on me. Rowing has taught me resilience, teamwork, and discipline, and volunteering felt like a meaningful way to support others as they discover the sport. I was also drawn to the Academy’s focus on developing leadership skills and creating opportunities to grow both personally and within the rowing community. It felt like the perfect place to make a positive contribution while learning from others who share similar values.
What skills have you developed through volunteering?
Volunteering has helped me develop a range of practical and interpersonal skills. I’ve improved my communication skills - especially when explaining techniques clearly and positively to new rowers. I’ve also gained confidence in leadership, whether guiding sessions, or helping coordinate group activities. Working with people of different ages and abilities has strengthened my teamwork, patience, and adaptability.
How would you describe the experience so far?
Overall, the experience has made me more organised, responsible, and comfortable taking the initiative.
What have you enjoyed most?
I love seeing new rowers grow in confidence and skill. Being part of a supportive, positive community - and helping others enjoy the sport - makes the experience especially rewarding.
