Choose the world you want with Fairtrade Fortnight

FT_FortnightDates

Fairtrade Fortnight runs for two weeks each year and is a way for people to learn more about Fairtrade and the impact climate change is having on farmers around the world.

Fairtrade Fortnight 27 February - 12 March 2023

Fairtrade Fortnight will once again shine a spotlight on the climate crisis and the increasing threat it poses to some of the planet’s most beloved food products as well as the livelihoods of the farmers and agricultural workers who grow them. It will show how the future survival of the world’s most popular foods – such as bananas, cocoa, and coffee – hangs in the balance unless we achieve inclusive and equitable climate solutions, with farmers and agricultural workers playing a central role in the climate response.

What is Fairtrade?

Fair trade means that producers receive a guaranteed and fair price for their products, regardless of the price on the world market. The prices paid for the crops need to increase significantly for farmers to escape poverty and have the means to adapt to climate emergencies.

The Fairtrade Foundation offers a system of certification that aims to ensure a set of standards are met in the production and supply of a product or ingredient. For farmers and workers in the supply chain, this means standards for workers’ rights, working conditions and pay.

How the university is supporting Fairtrade

As a university, we want to show our support by selling a range of Fairtrade items, and promoting Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and all year round. You can find Fairtrade bananas, coffee, chocolate and confectionary items across all UoN retail outlets (excluding Starbucks, Costa and the Student’s Union).

Look out for coffee bean competitions in Coates Café, George Green Library Café, Hallward Café, Hipps Café, Trent Café and Marmont Café. Guess the number of coffee beans in a jar to win a prize!

There will be Fairtrade bake sales throughout the fortnight at the following locations:

  • Mon 6 March at Coates Cafe
  • Weds 8 March at George Green Library Café

Complete our Fairtrade survey and win

We're inviting our staff and students to give their thoughts on Fairtrade by participating in our Fairtrade Survey, open until Sunday 12 March. By taking part, you will help us understand how our staff and students feel around ethical sourcing and Fairtrade.

And as a thank you, use your university email address at the end of the survey to be entered into a free prize draw.

Complete the survey

You can also get rewarded for getting involved in Fairtrade Fortnight on Green Rewards. Earn points for your sustainable actions and win prizes as you go!

To further show our commitment to Fairtrade, we are working towards reinstating the Fairtrade University and College Award. Join us this Fairtrade Fortnight and choose to act for climate justice. To find out more visit www.fairtrade.org.uk/fortnight.
