Inspirational coaching… the key to sporting success
The University of Nottingham strives for excellence in every field and we know playing sport enriches the student experience. Olympians and world-class athletes stand among our students and alumni, and we are proud of the strength of sport across the University.
We are currently ranked 7th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings with more than 70 sports clubs we are one of only two universities which do not offer sports courses yet achieve a top-ten BUCS ranking. Our ambition is to break into the top five. To help achieve this, we wish to secure professional coaching for our elite athletes as well as high-quality coaching for our participatory sports teams. We want to grow sport at all levels, underlining our commitment to a Sport-for-All ethos, and help our athletes and teams - able-bodied and disabled, at elite or participatory levels - to achieve their sporting potential.
Our solution
Many of our world-class sportsmen and women were inspired by Vaughan Parry Williams, the former Director of Sport and Physical Recreation, who dedicated almost 33 years to sport at the University before his death in 2009.
He passionately believed students should achieve their sporting potential as well as thrive academically. The Vaughan Parry Williams Coaching Fund was established in his memory.

Coaches are the unsung heroes of many sports. Yet these are the people that make the difference between good and great athletes. This was certainly a major factor for my sporting success. Having access to professional coaching at Nottingham University would give our students a tremendous boost in fulfilling their sporting ambitions.
