White wording on black background - Connect with an alumni mentor and invest in your future

Choosing your career and preparing for life beyond university is a defining moment in your undergraduate journey. With the support of a University of Nottingham alumni mentor, you’ll feel empowered to explore your options and make informed decisions, build confidence to transition into the workplace, and take steps towards a future full of potential

One-to-one support programme

The Future Ready: Mentoring programme is designed to increase your career readiness through tailored support from the Careers team and one-to-one mentoring.

During your one-to-one relationship with your alumni mentor, you may want to discuss topics such as narrowing down your career ideas, preparing for work experience or gaining an insight into workplace culture.

Your mentor will share their knowledge, skills, and experience and ask you questions to build your confidence and set the groundwork to ease your transition into the workplace.

Getting involved

The programme is open to 50 students and will run for five months from February to June. It is open to undergraduate students who were in receipt of free school meals at school.

February

The focus of this month is to prepare you for your one-to-one mentoring sessions and introducing you to the programme. This will be done through a two-hour workshop led by Careers and an introductory Teams call between you, your mentor and a member of the Careers team.

March to June

The following four months are dedicated to your one-to-one relationship with your alumni mentor. However, the support from the Careers team doesn’t end here, during this time you will also be able to access dedicated one-to-one support through bookable appointments, a weekly online drop-in and connect with your peers on the programme via the private Teams site.

Being matched to an alumni supporter

You will be matched to your alumni mentor based on a comprehensive application process, in which we will ask about motivations, personality and skills you would like to develop.

We will also ask about preferences related to the sectors you are interested in. However, we cannot guarantee that you will be matched to someone in the specific area of your choice.

My alumni mentor has been amazing.

We agreed to meet online every two weeks, which we stuck to and covered a range of topics such as interviews, experience, CVs, career paths and more.

Future Ready participant 2024-25

My alumni mentor was a consultant in a tech company, so talking to him really helped me make my decision on whether or not I wanted to be a consultant.

He recommended some useful tools to help with networking.
