Embracing and maintaining decay to create an open, living museum - regenerating the site and displaying its rich heritage.

Being part of Studio 2 has enlightened my understanding of the interconnected nature between architecture and landscape, and how to respond both sensitively and radically to existing contexts. The studio has encouraged me to develop ideas freely and clearly through the three scales, forming an enriching base to my practice in the future.

The Radical Rural

This proposal presents a response to ‘The Value of Decay’ in the ruined landscape of Lumsdale Valley, Matlock. As part of Studio 2, this project encapsulates the focus of this year’s unit, encouraging the engagement of the three scales: ‘landscape’, ‘building’ and ‘detail’, through drawings, fragments and model explorations.

This project expands upon initial thesis research, investigating the strong relationship between continued ruination and rich experiential occurrences. The design project investigates how decay can be ‘embraced’ or ‘maintained’ in adaptive projects, whilst ensuring safe and enriching experiences for visitors.

The proposal transforms the continuously decaying site of Lumsdale Valley into an open, living museum. This aims to make the site accessible whilst connecting the ruins together through raised walkways, walled gardens and ruin supports. A fermentation industry, exhibition space and restaurant are also proposed to regenerate the site, whilst exhibiting its progressing state of decay and rich heritage.

New interventions will be read as ‘ruins in the making’, whilst existing ruins will be maintained in some areas and completely untouched in others.
