Study spaces


Our libraries have a mix of study space, so you can choose a location to suit your study style, from group work in open plan areas to individual study booths in silent zones.

You'll also have access to assistive technology rooms and dedicated postgraduate study spaces.

Our smaller libraries (Business Library, Denis Arnold Music Library and Manuscripts and Special Collections) all provide a mix of individual and group study areas with a quiet atmosphere.

Booking group study rooms


Any University of Nottingham student or member of staff may book a group study room by using their University Office 365 Outlook Calendar.

  • Bookings can be made on any device, any time and anywhere, up to 2 weeks in advance
  • You can book a 3 hour slot, and hold one live booking, per person at any one time
  • You do not need a key to gain access to group study rooms
  • You will find a list of group study rooms in the Outlook Calendar listed by Campus-Building-Room:
    eg. UP-HALLWARD-LG102, JC-DLRC-GSR1, NMS-MESCH-GML-A02b, SB-MAINBLDG-JCG-A40

Please note, most of our libraries also have centrally timetabled rooms which are available to book by University staff using the central booking system.

Top tips

If you are making a group booking and would like longer than the 3 hours, other members of your group may add additional bookings.

There are group study rooms available in the Teaching and Learning Building on University Park that may also be booked using your University Outlook Calendar.

Booking individual study rooms 


We have individual study rooms, for any student or member of staff, to book in George Green and Greenfield Medical Libraries. Hallward LIbrary has individual study rooms that can only be booked by postgraduate students.

The booking system works in the same way as the group study rooms, by using your University Office 365 Outlook Calendar.

  • Bookings can be made on any device, any time and anywhere, up to 2 weeks in advance
  • You can book a 3 hour slot, and hold one live booking, per person at any one time
  • If you would like a key during the time you have the room booked, please ask at the lending desk
  • You will find a list of individual study rooms in the Outlook Calendar listed by Campus-Building-Room eg, UP-GEORGEGREEN-E11, NMS-MEDSCH-GML-A22f. 
  • Hallward Library postgraduate individual study rooms are restricted to postgraduate Outlook accounts and are listed as Campus-Building-Room eg. UP-HALLWARD-B312

Laptop loans


You can borrow a laptop for up to three hours use in the library. You may be able to renew your loan subject to availability.

Laptops can be borrowed from library lending desks or self-service lockers where available. For the conditions of loan download the guidelines for using the laptop loan service.

Assistive technology rooms


There are three assistive technology rooms available. Please see our Enhanced Library Support pages for more information. 

How to book an assistive technology room

Book the assistive technology rooms: 

Let us know:

  • which library you want to use
  • date and time
  • duration required (up to three hours)
  • your Library Card number

You may hold four bookings of three hours at any one time.

On arrival

  • Collect the key from the lending desk (you have 30 minutes from the beginning of the booking to collect)
  • You will need to sign for it and show your University or Library Card
  • Return the key to the lending desk at the end of the session
