Triangle

A healthy and sustainably designed urban environment which allows the community to connect and interact with the nature and history of an area.

Elsa Mendoza

I am a Mexican architect and Postgraduate Excellence Scholarship awardee. I consider the sustainable design strategies to be not just an approach, but a necessity to lessen the built environment impact and to give the buildings and the communities the ability of resilience. This master’s programme gave me the tools to do so.

Sustainable Optimised Urban Living (S.O.U.L)

The project S.O.U.L.: Sustainable Optimised Urban Living objective was to develop a holistic sustainable approach to housing design, and aim to be carbon neutral, citizen centric and a positive contribution to the city of Nottingham.

Drawbridge Housing represents the green link between Nottingham Castle and the City Centre. The concept was to develop a healthy and sustainable urban environment that allowed the community to interact and be connected with the natural and historic context, by adopting a dynamic, modular and staggered system for the current undeniable requirement to achieve a more thoughtful, conscious and well performing built environment that could be resilient and adaptable for the future. The design aspirations were to achieve Passive House standard and a Carbon Neutral proposal. The first was successfully achieved, and the later was achieved by heat demand neutrality and a low carbon material selection.
