Oliver Hall

Hi I’m Ollie. I have just completed my degree in Product design and Manufacture at the University of Nottingham. In my spare time I am a trampoline gymnast, I have been training and competing for the last 10 years and in 2022 I was a national finalist. I have also been on the BUCS squad every year I have been at university.

I was a member of the UoN trampoline committee as treasurer allowing me to have a leading role in shaping and maintaining the club. When at home I also got my level 1 coaching qualification allowing me to give back to the club that has become such a major part of my life. I also enjoy cooking and going to the gym in my free time.

Swift Step

For my major project I have designed the swift step, a ski boot with new features to make it more accessible for users. I began by researching potential users of ski boots and the problems that they may currently face. I decided to target my product at those over the age of 55 as this is an age when conditions that may make skiing harder while still being of an age when skiing is a reasonable activity to do.

I wanted to make a product that the eliminates the users need to bend down to put on their ski boots. Through a variety of testing and design iteration I have created my final product. The unique feature of the Swift Step compared to other ski boots on the market is the sliding activation mechanism at the back. This mechanism allows the user to put on the boots hands free and tighten it all without bending down. They can then release this mechanism by simply hitting the top of one of the sliders.

The swift step also features a dual quick release ratchet system allowing for precise tightness adjustments. The dials allow the user to adjust the tightness at the cuff and shoe independently with a great deal of ease and accuracy. The boots also conform to the international standard ISO 5355 which means that they can fit onto the bindings of any other skis on the market. Overall, this is a project that I am very proud of and believe that I have made a product that is easy for all users especially over the age of 55.
