Inspired by the work of Dr Alexandra Lang in the human factors department I set off designing a device that would utilise negative pressure to alleviate numerous scar complications following a caesarean surgery.

I am fascinated by product design for medical applications and enjoy utilising and conducting human factors research to ensure designs are perfectly suited to user's needs.

Over my time at the University of Nottingham I have developed a particular skill for computer aided design and enjoy utilising rapid prototyping extensively within my workflow.

Last year I had the privilege to work for the Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College London as part of my year in industry. There I designed a robot for the insertion of cochlear implants during surgery. During this placement I gained invaluable engineering and design experience as well as interviewing over 20 surgeons and attending the British Cochlear Implant Group conference in Newcastle to present a poster on the experiments we conducted using the device.

Following this insightful year, I am currently looking for work in the medical device industry.

A personal negative pressure wound therapy device for aiding the recovery of C-section scars

Inspired by the work of Dr Alexandra Lang in the human factors department I set off designing a device that would utilise negative pressure to alleviate numerous scar complications following a caesarean surgery. After research it became clear that these issues are staggeringly common and can cause further symptoms for the patient for the rest of their lives. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) devices do exist but are currently aimed towards physiotherapy clinics, allowing them to provide the use of the device as a service to patients. This means that the devices are extremely expensive and subsequently limits access to highly beneficial treatment methods due to the price and inconvenience of clinic visits.

My device, the Celuva, allows new mothers to utilise this technology in a portable and affordable manor. Simple to use, and comfortable to operate, the Celuva uses medical grade materials and thoughtful engineering to provide blissful treatment for as long as required with only the need to purchase new filters.
