From Plant to Product: A Production Masterplan Transforming Hemp Into Bio-based Materials

Unit 1A, “Forgotten Places”, focuses on neglected areas across the UK in need of major redevelopment. From Plant to Product, located in Thamesmead, London, contributes to the town’s redevelopment by proposing a hemp production masterplan - a regenerative urban strategy that cultivates hemp and transforms it into bio-based construction materials, such as hempcrete, to support the development of infrastructure in the town.

The masterplan revitalises the abandoned Thamesmead Golf Centre and its surrounding land. It is situated along the Ridgeway Link, a green wildlife corridor, and incorporates a reed-clad nature pavilion that provides nesting opportunities for local wildlife, celebrating Thamesmead’s ecology. In the material production warehouses, hempcrete is used internally and hemp cladding externally, aiming to reduce carbon emissions. To ensure adaptability, the masterplan also allows for the cultivation of alternative industrial crops during colder months, such as winter flax, which can be processed into insulation and other sustainable materials.
