Bristol FutureFarms Laboratory

Unit 1B explores ‘continuity and connectivity’ by integrating contemporary interventions into the urban fabric, drawing on historical, physical, cultural, and social continuities to create architecture that supports and enriches society.

Positioned as a ‘collaborative ecosystem’, this urban farm integrates agriculture, sustainable technology, education, and community within an open, interconnected design.

Permeable thresholds and transparent structures invite exploration and knowledge sharing throughout the building. Distinct blocks for different functions are connected by atriums and bridges that both physically and symbolically bring together researchers, educators and the public to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The scheme delivers vital green space that encourages public involvement, while its adaptable hydroponic farms and laboratories support cutting-edge research and development.

Celebrating and revitalising Bristol’s historic waterways, the project ensures their sustainable future through the use of recycled river water and passive design strategies.

Together, these elements form a compelling model for urban sustainability and collaboration.
