Design/Build studio

The ethos of this scheme is to design an Early Childhood Development Centre for a client in Malesa, South Africa. Unit 2A, Design/Build, focuses on supporting the community by helping shape a better future for the next generation to ensure a better chance in life.

The project involves a 50m² extension and retrofit to include a classroom, office, storage space, and kitchen, qualifying the building as an Early Childhood Development Centre and making it eligible for government funding. The pilot of this design was dominant roofs, they create unique spaces for children to play.

The scheme also promotes self-sufficiency through the creation of a farming market, where ingredients are grown on school grounds. Surplus produce is sold to the local community, generating additional income to support educational resources and facility maintenance. Enhanced visibility within the school layout also supports better student supervision, helping to reduce bullying. Additionally, the school doubles as a community hub for events when classes are not in session.

This project is not just about constructing a building, it’s about creating a space that empowers education, fosters community, and grows opportunity.
