Orla Conneely

Orla is a third-year architecture student from Derbyshire. She is passionate about designing schemes that enhance the well-being of humans and nature, through the reintroduction of natural environments into heavily urbanised contexts. Through expressive watercolour paintings and computer programmes like AutoCAD, Orla portrays the life of a drawing through atmospheric, textured visuals.

The Grey Area; Improving Connectivity for Disabled People

Our focus in Unit 3A was London’s Green Belt, specifically Stanmore Country Park. The ethos of this unit is centred around sustainable and social design. We explored how development on the Green Belt could be done in a respectful manner.

My project, ‘The Grey Area’, dives into disability, a topic that is often skirted around or misunderstood. A ‘grey area’ is often referred to as a situation that is not clear, much like disability is to other people. In areas such as employment and the housing market, society has created many barriers for disabled people. My social housing scheme was designed with the specific aim of improving their connectivity - to jobs, accessible and affordable living, and community - in a holistic way.

My design brings environmental benefits by increasing biodiversity through communal gardening and biophilic architecture, rooting the housing into its landscape. The scheme includes a co-dependent relationship between people and nature, creating unique, inclusive spaces and avoiding stereotypical accessible design solutions.
