Elliot Whatling

Elliot graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2023 followed by a year-long placement at rg+p before continuing Master of Architecture studies at Nottingham University. Elliot is particularly interested in luxury residential architecture. Elliot primarily designs through a lens of phenomenology and tectonics, mainly using visuals and sketches to develop my projects through an iterative process or testing and re-testing.

The Rooted Works

U1 – Adaptable Communities is concerned with Placemaking, Les Grands Atelier Campus already benefits from some exceptional facilities as a maker community.

The Rooted Works prioritizes community engagement by creating spaces that encourage interaction, collaboration, and shared ownership of workshops and green spaces. The design features flexible gathering areas, open courtyards, and workshops to foster knowledge exchange and lasting relationships.

Regenerative design is central, with hands-on workshops promoting sustainable building, local materials, and environmental care. Architecture becomes an active participant in nurturing resilience and creativity. New workshops connect with existing making spaces, strengthening a network of craft, learning, and production. This continuity roots the intervention in local culture and encourages intergenerational knowledge-sharing. Material choices also reflect the project’s strong connection to place with site-sourced materials, such as excavated earth used in rammed earth walls, anchoring the architecture physically and symbolically. This reduces environmental impact while celebrating the raw beauty of the landscape. The result is a tactile, resourceful, and sustainable architecture that embodies a profound harmony between community, craft, and the environment.
