This design studio addresses the urgent need for high-quality, sustainable housing in the UK, where housing delivery consistently falls short of demand and often lacks environmental performance.

Ingrid Farfan

Growing up in Mexico City, I became aware of the environmental challenges faced by dense urban areas. This awareness sparked my passion for sustainable architecture. Studying in the master degree in Architecture and Sustainable Design in the UK has deepened my commitment to designing adaptive, efficient spaces that respect both people and place, aiming for long-lasting, positive impact.

This design studio addresses the urgent need for high-quality, sustainable housing in the UK, where housing delivery consistently falls short of demand and often lacks environmental performance. Set in Toton, Nottinghamshire, the project involves designing energy-efficient, contextually appropriate homes and community amenities. The design proposal intended to integrate environmental design principles from the outset, addressing issues of comfort, resilience, social inclusion, and carbon neutrality at both community and building scales by envisioning a mixed-use, net-zero urban neighbourhood that supports diverse lifestyles, promotes active mobility, and creates a strong sense of place. The site’s strategic connectivity, including tramway extension plans, presents opportunities for integrated transport and vibrant public realms. Designs must be scalable, replicable, and aligned with Broxtowe Borough Council’s local planning and sustainability goals.
