Projects and designs from students in our postgraduate MArch courses.

Master of Architecture (Postgraduate)

The four one-year MArch postgraduate programmes are all designed-focussed and supported by specialised modules that are research and/or practice oriented. The MArch Sustainable Urban Design, MArch Architecture and Sustainable Design, and MArch Design+Build programmes all consist of design studio units and other modules related to their specific specialism. The MArch Advanced Architecture Design enables students to choose from any of the specialised design studios and elective modules offered by the other three MArch programmes or to choose the architecture-focussed vertical communities studio unit. All of the MArch studio units also offer collaborative opportunities for students to engage with either developers, land owners, local governments, or charitable organisations.

MArch Architecture and Sustainable Design

The MArch Architecture and Sustainable Design master’s programme is designed to equip postgraduate students, practitioners in architecture and building industry professionals with the necessary skills to integrate environmental design principles from an early stage in the design process, enabling the delivery of truly sustainable buildings.

The course builds on a unique project-based approach to support the application of the social, environmental and technological aspects of sustainable architecture, taught in complementary modules, in equal measures in creative studio design projects. Topics covered include human comfort, energy efficiency, carbon management and urban regeneration, alongside accompanying tools to assess proposed design strategies.

Design Studio Units 2024-25

  • Sustainable Optimised Living Toton: Nottingham - Renata Tubelo and Lorna Kiamba

MArch Advanced Architecture Design

The MArch Architecture Design programme focuses on the development and application of specialist architectural knowledge and advanced design techniques and technologies. The programme responds to the increasing competition in the professional procurement of buildings and the growing demand for specialist knowledge and skills in the pursuit of architectural excellence.

This programme offers students the opportunity to concentrate on architectural or urban design, humanities, environmental design and technology to a high level of sophistication without the need to work within a single specialist area. Design-led, this enables students to develop and apply specialist architectural knowledge and advanced architectural design techniques to enhance their professional knowledge and skills.

Design Studio Units 2024-25

  • Vertical Communities Museum and Hotel: Liverpool (1) - Yuri Hadi and Tim Heath
  • Vertical Communities Museum and Hotel: Liverpool (2) - Yuri Hadi and Anran Chen

MArch Sustainable Urban Design

The MArch Sustainable Urban Design programme focuses on the design of cities including placemaking and the public realm. The programme is designed to enable graduates to enhance the quality of cities around the world by bringing innovative design into a new relationship with the latest research. Modules focus on the structure of urban form, the way that cities function, and how people use them in order to create urban places that respond to the major opportunities and challenges facing society.

The programme covers all of the areas required of an urban designer in contemporary practice, including: public and urban design theory and practice; urban regeneration; sustainable urbanism theory and applications; and urban policy. This enables the programme to impart the knowledge and to develop the necessary skills to face the contemporary cultural, historical, social, economic, and environmental challenges in terms of achieving holistic sustainability in cities around the World.

Design Studio Units 2024-25

  • Co-Urban Creative Quarter: Nottingham - Florian Wiedmann and Mohammad Hamdan
  • Urban Happiness: Liverpool - Miguel Gentil and Tim Heath
  • Cultural Hub and Square: Liverpool - Amy Tang and Anran Chen

MArch Architecture Design+Build

The MArch Architecture Design and Build programme focuses on the relationships between design and the physical creation of space. Our programme will explore the nature of making and production as they relate to architectural design and practice.

The programme is designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to learn about architecture by making, to understand materials through hands-on exploration in their application, and ultimately to develop a critical response to the implications of design decisions on people and places.

Within the programme, you will be able to develop design ideas at 1:1 scale and the integration with architecture students from varying backgrounds and experience levels. This also involves working on your own project with our design and build studio.

Design Studio Units 2024-25

Postgraduate MSc courses

MSc Advanced Building Performance Engineering

The MSc Advanced Building Performance Engineering course develops a high level of engineering and technical expertise in energy conversion processes, combined with practical abilities in management-related issues. The programme places a strong emphasis on science, technology, and engineering with a focus on renewable and sustainable energy technologies and the built environment. The programme uniquely combines this with effective management skills, economic appraisal and an understanding of the current policies and regulations that can be applied within modern industry in the UK, EU and internationally.

MSc Sustainable Building Technology

The MSc Sustainable Building Technology places a strong emphasis on the successful integration of renewable and sustainable energy technologies into buildings, which requires an understanding of both design and technology and hence the close co-operation of architecture and engineering. The MSc project involves the design of a complex of apartments, an indoor farm and an organic market. The first floor of the apartment part is used for stores and basic services due to lighting problems. The northern part of the two-story building is used as a reception and gardening classroom. The whole community provides living space, job opportunities, and vocational training for low-income people. The whole complex is divided into two parts: the apartments and the farm, which are linked by a bridge. The first floor of the apartments is used for stores and basic services due to lighting problems. On the north side, the second floor is used for reception and gardening classes. The farm is elevated on the ground floor, creating a perfect grey space for the organic market.

MSc Renewable Energy and Architecture

The MSc Renewable Energy and Architecture programme focuses on the integration of energy from renewable sources to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability within the context of architecture, planning, and construction. The course includes the design, simulation, and optimisation of energy efficient and sustainable building and construction solutions in urban and landscape settings and in different climates. The programme involves the creation of scientifically verified design decisions and the application of these at all levels and all stages of the design process, from site planning to landscape design and from urban and detailed building design to construction.

MSc Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship

The MSc course in Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship has been designed timely in response to the worldwide commitment to tackle climate change and develop the renewable energy economy. The course has attracted a great interest not only from applicants with an engineering and science background but also from applicants with a management and economics background, who want to gain knowledge in the cutting-edge renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. This course aims to equip students with the required knowledge and skills to fulfil their ambition and contribution in the fast-growing renewable energy economy.
