Staying safe and responsible

Our mission is to provide a great sense of community in a healthy, safe, clean and pleasant environment to enable students to learn, live and socialise.

The University of Nottingham aims to provide you with quality accommodation along with efficient services delivered by our friendly staff. In return, as one of our residents, you have a responsibility to make a positive contribution to your new Hall community by following regulations set out in this guide, being considerate and courteous to your fellow residents and by respecting our neighbours who also live in our nearby community.

Our campuses and Nottingham city are a safe place for students to live, ranked as the 6th best city in the UK for students, and Nottingham City has held the Purple Flag status since 2010, which means that Nottingham is a safe place to live or go for a night out.

Safety on Campus

Your safety is always a priority when living in halls. We have a 24/7 dedicated university security team that cultivates a safe and secure environment on campus, while always being on hand if you ever need them. The security team has numerous responsibilities, including routine patrols, crime prevention and detection, and the investigation of complaints, among others.

If you need to contact the Security team, you can call 0115 951 3013 or email security@nottingham.ac.uk. The Security Control and Emergencies team operates 24/7. For in-person assistance, the Security Reception (located at the rear of Hallward Library) is open Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm.

Student Conduct

The University of Nottingham is committed to fostering an environment that values and respects all members of the university community. We expect everyone to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the values of inclusivity, fairness and respect.

The purpose of the Student Code of Conduct (Non-Academic) Discipline is to provide a framework for addressing behaviour that is not in line with these values.

The code applies to all students, including those on taught and research courses, undergraduates, postgraduates and apprentices.

The University does not tolerate bullying, harassment, hate or sexual misconduct on our campuses. If you, or someone you know, has experienced or witnessed an incident like this, you can tell us anonymously or provide your contact details through our Report and Support system.

Fire Safety

The University maintains the highest standards of conduct when it comes to fire safety. We are committed to keeping everyone on campus safe. The key legislation covering fire safety is the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 – you can find out more here.

All fire safety measures are outlined at each residence, and you should familiarise yourself with the information that is specific to your hall. Please note that tampering with fire safety equipment will result in disciplinary action, fines, and replacement or repair costs.

For more information on fire safety, please visit this page.

Smoking, Vaping and BBQs

Please note that food cannot be prepared in study rooms. Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes are permitted in designated smoking areas outdoors, but are strictly forbidden inside all University buildings.

While having barbecues within the university's beautiful grounds may seem like a harmless pursuit, barbecues present a significant risk of fire, damage to land and a potential threat to wildlife. Therefore, barbeques are not permitted anywhere within university grounds, including halls of residence, unless part of a centrally organised event where appropriate approval has been obtained.

Health and Safety

First aid kits are available at your designated Welcome Point, and the Security team is on duty 24/7 on 0115 951 3013. If you are keen to develop essential first aid skills, you can join the First Aid Society, who provide training to help students respond effectively in emergencies.

If you experience an accident (An accident is an unintentional event that results in damage, injury, or harm), please report it promptly to your Residential Experience team or Welcome Point team on 0115 748 7600. For serious emergencies, contact Security on 0115 951 8888 (or extension 18888 internally). Any general health and safety concerns should also be reported to your Welcome Point team – their details can be found on the Contact Us page.

Prohibited Items

We want you to make your room a home from home. However, we ask that you refrain from bringing some items with you to ensure your safety and that of your fellow residents. Prohibited items include candles, tea lights and incense sticks. Door hangers may violate fire safety regulations and are therefore banned.

The following electrical items are also prohibited; electrical toasters, hotplates, kettles (apart from a travel kettle), microwaves, cookers (or any cooking appliance or food preparation item), irons, extension leads (unless it is fused), decorative lights (LED lights are permitted), electrical under-blankets, lava lamps, heaters and personal fridges. Bikes or E-scooters are not to be stored inside a room. Secure bike storage lockers are available on campus.

The possession, use or discharge of any weapon, explosive or detonator. The use (or storage) of fireworks, similar pyrotechnics, or the release of sky lanterns on University grounds or within University residences is forbidden unless part of a centrally organised event where appropriate permission has been obtained.

We may remove any of the items listed above or anything else which is a hazard. Further regulations on weapons and hazardous items can be found in the University’s Code of Discipline.

If you discover a prohibited item that may cause harm to yourself or others, please report this immediately to Security on 0115 951 3013. For other minor items, you can contact your Welcome Point directly on 0115 748 7600, who will be able to assist further.

If you are found to have a prohibited item, you may receive a warning from your Welcome Point. For more serious prohibited items, Security may conduct a Search, Investigation and Resolution, where further action may be considered in line with the Student Code of Conduct (Non-Academic).

Drugs

We are committed to creating a safe and supportive community in halls and across our campuses. While the possession, use or supply of illegal drugs is not permitted, our approach is centred on prevention, education and wellbeing rather than punishment alone.

Where small amounts of drugs are found, these may be confiscated and the student issued with a warning, followed by a conversation with staff to explore any underlying issues and to ensure the right support is in place. Students may also be asked to attend an awareness course with an external provider, which they would be expected to fund.

More serious cases, such as repeated breaches, the supply of drugs, or the possession of Class A substances, will be treated as misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct (Non-Academic). These may result in referral to a Student Misconduct Panel, suspension from University accommodation, and, in some circumstances, involvement of the Police.

Above all, our priority is student safety and wellbeing, and we encourage anyone affected by substance use to seek support from Student Support & Wellbeing, HealthyU, or the Students’ Union Advice service.
