Commonwealth Games

As the 2022 Commonwealth Games finish this summer, we are delighted to have witnessed a host of University of Nottingham students and alumni representing their countries. These games were eleven days of fantastic sport with members of the #GreenandGold giving their all at the highest level.

With the 2022 Birmingham XXII Commonwealth Games now complete, we are delighted to have seen so many athletes connected to the University of Nottingham compete for their countries. We've listed all of the #GreenandGold competing athletes and coaches below, as well as created a handy tracker of their success and achievements at the games. Congratulations to all on their accomplishments this summer.

🥇 University of Nottingham Sport Scholar Gina Kennedy becomes Commonwealth Champion in the Women's Squash Singles

🥇 Former University of Nottingham Staff member Emily Campbell becomes Commonwealth Champion in the Women's +87kg Weight Lifting

🥇 University of Nottingham Premier Squash League team member Declan James won gold in the Men's Doubles Squash with partner James Willstrop

🥈 Alumna Sophie Unwin won a Silver medal in the Women's Paracycling (Tandem B 1,000m Time Trial)

🥉 Student and scholar Amy Platten claims a Bronze medal in the Judo (-48kg)

🥉 Alumni Tom Sorsby was a part of the Team England Men's Hockey squad who won their Bronze medal match 6-3

Tin-Tin Ho | Table Tennis

Team, Women's and Doubles

As part of Team England, Tin-Tin reached the Quarter Finals of the Team Event.

Tin-Tin is seeded 12th in the Women's Singles and won against Hannah Silcock of Jersey in the round of 32. Tin-Tin lost to Yangzi Liu in the round of 16.

Tin-Tin and mixed doubles partner Liam Pitchford progressed to the quarter-finals after beating Canada in the round of 16. Their quarter-final match saw the pair lose a very close match 3-2.

Tin-Tin and Team England partner Maria Tsaptsinos exited the Women's Doubles at the round of 16.

The team events of the table tennis competition will run from the 29 July to the 1 August. The women's singles will run from the 3 to the 6 August, whilst the women's doubles will run from 4 to the 7 August.

Mollie Patterson | Table Tennis

Unfortunately despite being selected, Mollie Patterson was unable to compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to injury. 

Gina Kennedy | Squash

Women's and Doubles

🥇 University of Nottingham Sport Scholar Gina Kennedy becomes Commonwealth Champion in the Women's Squash Singles!

Gina and her doubles partner Patrick Rooney won their first match 2-0 but then went out in the round of 16 with a 2-0 loss.

With her Team England Women's Doubles partner Lucy Turmel, Gina progressed to the quarter-finals on 5 August where they lost to New Zealand.

Women's competition begins on Friday 29 July with the Women's singles final on Wednesday 3 August

Doubles competition begins on Wednesday 3 August with the finals on Sunday 7 and Monday 8 August

Frank Baines | Gymnastics

Artistic Gymnastics

Frank finished in 7th place in the Men's All Around Gymnastics competition on the 29th July.

As part of Team Scotland, Frank finished in 5th place in the Men's Team event.

Frank finished in 6th place in the Men's Floor Event.

The Men's Horizontal Bar final saw an 8th place finish for Frank.

The artistic gymnastics competition is scheduled to begin on the 29 July at the Birmingham Arena, with the culmination of the action on the 2 August.

Faiza Zafar | Squash

Women's and Doubles

In the Women's Singles event, Faiza lost to Yiwen Chen of Malaysia in the Round of 32. 

Faiza then won her Round of 16 Plate match 3-0 and her Last 8 match 3-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the Plate competition. The semi-final unfortunately saw a 3-0 defeat for Faiza.

Faiza partnered with team mate Amna Fayyaz for the Women's Doubles but lost in the Round of 16. In the plate competition the pair beat Sri Lanka and then Canada to reach the final. In the final they will play Australia on 8 August. 

With partner Nasir Iqbal, Faiza won their Mixed Doubles Round of 32 match before losing in the Round of 16.

Charlie Harding | Triathlon (Guide Runner)

Para Triathlon

With Oscar Kelly, Charlie Harding finished 5th in the Men's Para PTVI Triathlon on Sunday 31st July.

The para triathlon events are scheduled to take place on Sunday 31 July at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield

Amy Platten | Judo

Women's -48kg Event

🥉 Amy Platten claimed the Bronze medal in the Judo (-48kg) on Monday 1 August

The Commonwealth Judo competition is scheduled to take place from the 1 August to the 3 August at Coventry Arena.

Jamie Barden | Rugby Sevens

As part of Team England, Jamie Barden and the Rugby Sevens squad finished in 9th place after beating Uganda 31-17 in the play-off.

The Rugby Sevens competition takes place from the 29th July to the 31st July at the Coventry Stadium. 

Tin-Tin Ho | Table Tennis

Final - 12.30pm to 3pm on Monday 8 August

Sophie Unwin | Paracycling

Sophie won the Bronze medal in the Women's Paracycling (Track Tandem B) on Friday 29th July.

Sophie also won a Silver medal in the Women's Paracycling (Tandem B 1,000m Time Trial) on Sunday 31st July. Congratulations Sophie!

The track and para track cycling events run from Friday 29 July until Monday 1 August at the Lee Valley Velopark in London.

Maria Tsaptsinos | Table Tennis

As part of Team England, Maria reached the Quarter Finals of the Team Event.

On 3 August Maria won her opening singles group match 4-0, before narrowly losing her second 4-3 eliminating her from the competition.

Maria entered the mixed doubles with Sam Walker but lost narrowly 3-2 in the Round of 64 on 4 August. 

Maria and Team England partner Tin-Tin Ho exited the Women's Doubles at the round of 16.

The team events of the table tennis competition will run from the 29 July to the 1 August. The women's singles will run from the 3 to the 6 August, whilst the women's doubles will run from 4 to the 7 August.

Katie Snowden | Athletics

Women's 1500m

Katie progressed through round 1 finishing second in her heat and entered the final on Sunday 7 August. In the final, Katie finished 7th.

Final - Sunday 7 August at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham

Paul McCreery - Table Tennis

Paul McCreery, as part of Team Northern Ireland, won one of their three group matches before being eliminated.

Paul exited the Men's Singles on 5 August at the round of 32.

The team events of the table tennis competition will run from the 29 July to the 1 August. The men's singles will take place from the 3 August to the 8 August.

Tom Sorsby | Hockey

Men's Hockey

Tom and Team England won three of their pool matches (Ghana, Wales and Canada), and drew against India.

As part of the Team England coaching staff, Kelly and the team reached the Quarter Finals of the Team Event.

From Friday 29th July to Monday 8th August, Kelly will be a part of the Team England coaching set-up for the games.

Jamie has been a sport scholar at the University of Nottingham over the last few years and played a large part in the continued rise of the University of Nottingham Men's Rugby Club. This summer he represented Team England in Rugby Sevens.

Being a part of UoN means that I have access to world class facilities and world-class training partners, and this has been integral to helping me get me to the level I am at today. Over the next 6 to 12 months I want to continue to climb the rankings, and I also want to medal at the Commonwealth Games with this being my primary target for the next few months.

Having recently finished her Bsc Neuroscience degree at the University of Nottingham, Amy was selected for her first Commonwealth Games this summer and added a bronze medal to her BUCS Nationals triumph from 2020!

Frank Baines | Gymnastics | Team Scotland

Following up on his BUCS successes this year, we are delighted that Frank was selected for Team Scotland at this summer’s Commonwealth Games. These games were not Frank’s first Commonwealth’s however, as he represented his country at both the 2018 and 2014 editions of the games.
