Supported Fitness Sessions
Please note that our University of Nottingham Sport facilities are temporarily closed at the current time.
The perfect way to get into to the fitness suite!
If you want to get active by using our fitness suites, then the supported fitness sessions might be just the thing for you.
Once you have booked on team of trained and friendly instructors will support you in working towards your own fitness goals.
If you're a disabled student or a student with a mental health condition and feel that these sessions may benefit you, then please contact the Disability Sport Officer for more information.
Online fitness support
As all of the sports facilities are currently closed, our fitness instructor team are offering student members with the opportunity to access expert advice on your Health and Fitness journey in lockdown, online.
You will need to complete a form detailing what your requirements are, including any disabilities or medical conditions. Through the form our team will be able to better assess your needs and direct you to relevant content on our online hub, or connect you directly with an instructor to help you reach your health and fitness goals.

What are supported fitness sessions?
As a disabled student or student with mental health difficulties, you can access supported fitness inductions and sessions at our fitness suites in the David Ross Sports Village, Jubilee Sports Centre and Sutton Bonington Sports Centre.
If you have a UoN sports and fitness membership, then there is no additional charge for these sessions. The initiative includes:
- one induction session with a fitness centre instructor;
- one personal fitness programme session;
- review/support sessions on regular basis (maximum one session per week).
We hope that working with the same instructor every time you will be able to work towards achieving your goals and start to feel at home in our fitness centres.
How does the programme work?
To access the supported fitness sessions you will need to take the following steps:
- Contact our Disability Sport Officer via email to express an interest in the sessions or to find out more.
- The Disability Sport Officer will email you back and put you in contact with our Fitness Instructor lead on this programme - Sue Dunbar (David Ross SV and Jubilee) and Dan Keogh (Sutton Bonington*).
- Sue / Dan will email you back with a consultation form - detailing your availability and what you'd like to achieve from the sessions (i.e. to get fitter, to help manage your condition). You'll need to complete that and return to them as soon as you can.
- Sue/Dan will email you and introduce you to the fitness instructor who will take your first induction session and hopefully work with you on the supported fitness sessions moving forward.
- Your fitness instructor will contact you to introduce themselves and arrange a day and time for you to come in to one of the fitness csntres for your first session.
- You come in to one of the fitness centres for your first session and hopefully book on for your next session.
- Sue/Dan will be in regular contact with you to see how the sessions are going. If for any reason you're not happy with the sessions, you can feedback to them or the Disability Sport Officer.
* Please note that we are trialling these sessions at Sutton Bonington Sports Centre this term. You will be able to book a supported fitness session on set times and days, as detailed below:
- Mondays: 1300 - 1600
- Tuesdays: 1300 - 1600 & 2030 - 2130
- Wednesdays: 2030 - 2130
- Thursdays: 1200 - 1600
- Fridays: 2000 - 2200
- Weekends: 1300 - 1700
What do our members say?
Since engaging with the supported fitness sessions I have noticed a huge gain in confidence. I am accessing different things I wouldn’t do on my own because I wouldn’t know how to.
It’s really good that some fitness instructors are really aware of how different types of bodies work e.g. hyper extension, muscular or bone weakness etc. When a fitness instructor already knows about this or isn’t surprised by it, this can be a real encouragement for someone.
I would definitely recommend this initiative to other students and disabled members!
Visually impaired student
I decided to access these sessions, as due to my history with unhealthy exercise it really appealed to me that I could work with someone in a safe and supportive environment. It was also important for me to work with someone who would understand my needs and the goals I'm trying to meet.
As a result, I feel a lot more comfortable in the gym environment, know how to exercise safely and have improved my level of fitness. It has also been a good way of reducing stress and boosting my mood. I would definitely recommend this initiative as I have found it an extremely helpful, enjoyable, and a rewarding experience!

The unifying capacity of health, fitness, and being involved because of it has great significance for me.
That’s why I’m in the gym with a body that doesn’t work properly. If it wasn’t for the way the sports staff engage with me, I probably wouldn’t be there at all.
The help I’ve received, even the bonds I have with the people who work in the department, have had a hugely positive impact on my life, and I’m grateful for that.
