Information about our climbing wall

Who can use the climbing wall?

There are loads of different ways to use our climbing wall, with options suitable for all levels and commitment levels!

All our student, staff, alumni, associate and NHS / Blue Light UoN sport and fitness members can access our climbing wall free-of-charge as part of your membership.

Students and staff can also join our Just Play programme (students) and Staff Active sessions (staff).

Other customers can access our climbing wall via our Pay as You Go option.

Experienced climbers

If you would like to climb unsupervised, all climbers need to complete a competency test - the registration lasts for three years.

This can be booked online here.

New climbers

If you haven't climbed before, you will be required to attend either a Learn to climb, Auto-Belay induction or Bouldering induction before using our climbing wall unsupervised. You can find more details below.

Supervising other climbers

Registered climbers, who have passed their competency test / course are able to supervise up to two novice adults or three Under 18s on the climbing wall. Please register with our reception team on arrival.

Develop your climbing with our instructor-led sessions and courses

We provide a variety of beginner climbing sessions and intermediate coaching lessons which are designed to help push climbers to new heights. Led by our qualified and experienced instructors, our coached sessions will take you through the main safety principles of climbing and push you to be your best.

Climbing Taster

A short introduction to climbing. This is for new climbers - no previous experience or equipment is required. It is not to teach you too much about the technical side of climbing, but rather to guide you through the basics and give you an insight into the challenges ahead. Please note, new climbers will still need to complete our Learn to Climb session to be able to use the climbing wall unsupervised.

Just Play Climbing sessions

A relaxed climbing session for all abilities - no equipment required. It guide you through the basics and give you an insight into the challenges ahead. Please note, new climbers will still need to complete our Learn to Climb session to be able to use the climbing wall unsupervised.

Duration: 60 minutes

This session is for University of Nottingham students only through our Just Play programme. 

Staff Active climbing session

A relaxed climbing session for all abilities - no equipment required. It guide you through the basics and give you an insight into the challenges ahead. Please note, new climbers will still need to complete our Learn to Climb session to be able to use the climbing wall unsupervised.

Duration: 60 minutes

This session is for University of Nottingham staff and associates only through our Staff Active programme. 

Accessible climbing

Our Accessible Climbing Sessions are for disabled students and students with long term health conditions who would like the opportunity to climb.

Sessions run every Sunday (during term time) from 2.30 - 4pm.

If the accessible climbing session is not at a convenient time for you, it may be possible to arrange an alternative time for you to access the wall.

What is Accessible climbing?

At these sessions, we:

  • Offer a small group size to provide a welcoming experience.
  • Ensure each climber has plenty of time with our expert instructors, who have completed Climbing for All training.
  • Offer specialist equipment to support you to climb, e.g. noise cancelling headphones to reduce the distraction of surrounding noise, radio headsets for visually impaired students and equipment/hoists to support those with physical impairments.

Learn to Climb

No experience required.

This three hour climbing session will take you through all the basic safety principles and skills for using the climbing wall. This includes bouldering, the use of our auto belay, and our top ropes. This is for new climbers - no previous experience or equipment is required. Once completed, this session will have given you the knowledge and practical skills to use the climbing wall safely. For full unsupervised access, you will still be required to complete the registration process, this will be explained on completion of the LTC session.

A short introduction to bouldering, our instructors will take you through the basic skills needed to use our bouldering wall safely. This is for new boulderers - no previous experience or equipment is required. Once completed, this session will allow you to use the bouldering wall unsupervised. Please note, new climbers will still need to complete our Learn to climb session to be able to use the roped section of the climbing wall unsupervised.

Our equipment allows you to clip and climb without a partner. This short induction shows you how to use the auto belay system safely and effectively. Once completed, this session will allow you to use the auto belay unsupervised. Please note, new climbers will still need to complete our Learn to climb session in order to use the roped section of the climbing wall and bouldering wall unsupervised.

Learn to Lead Climbing Session

This is for experienced climbers who are able to top rope climb grade F5 without rests or assistance from the rope. Please bring your own harness which must be approved for lead climbing. The training is conducted over three x two hour sessions (based on a group of four). This session will give you the knowledge and skills to lead climb safely on an indoor climbing wall.

Intermediate Coaching

This drop in session is for registered climbers wishing to improve their climbing skills and technique. It’s ideal for all standards of climbers and our expert instructors will be able to assist with the areas you want to improve. Most coaching will take place on the bouldering wall but will also cater for specific needs and switch to the main wall if required. There is a maximum of four climbers in each group.

We do not teach lead climbing on these sessions. If you plan to improve on the roped wall you must be a competent belayer.

Duration: 90 mins

Advanced Coaching

This is for experienced intermediate climbers who have reached a plateau and are looking to improve their overall climbing ability. Book a session with one of our experienced coaches who will assess your current performance and design a training plan to help you reach your true potential.

Strength Assessment

Has your climbing plateaued? Try our Strength Assessment session with our experienced coaches. We use the Pitch 6 Force Board (strain gauge) to measure your pull strength in a short set of assessments. Once you have completed the assessment our coaches will suggest some training and equipment to help improve your overall strength. This is ideally for experienced climbers who are currently stuck around V4/V5 level bouldering. 

This session is not a 'climbing' coaching session.

Duration: Approx 30mins

Parent / guardian sessions

We offer two training modules for parents / guardians. These sessions will provide you with the skills needed to supervise your child safely on the climbing wall and are required if you have not already registered with us as a competent climber / boulderer.

Module 1: This is for the auto belay and bouldering wall only. The session will cover the important safety points of fitting harnesses, connecting to the auto belay and safe use of the bouldering wall.

Module 2: This is for the main climbing wall. The session will cover the required safety aspects associated with using the wall including tying on, belaying and lowering. Module 1 must be completed first unless you are already registered to use the bouldering wall.

Children's Climbing School

We offer a variety of sessions and programmes to introduce children to climbing and give them the confidence and support they'll need to get to the top. Our Climbing School follows the NICAS (National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme) syllabus and Wild Climbers Scheme for children under 7.
