You might need to

Prove you are a current student at Nottingham

You can request a student status letter on NottinghamHub at any time once you are registered on your course. New students have to start their course and complete registration before a letter can be issued.

When you register, you will receive an email confirmation confirming that you are studying at Nottingham.

The letter confirms the details on your student record, including your name, student ID, date of birth, course title, and start date.

It will also include a link to the university term dates, your expected completion date and a link to the graduation details which will include published university graduation dates.

Letters are provided directly to your email address.

Open a bank account

To open a bank account, you may need a letter from the university that confirms your course details, your address, and that you are a registered student. You must be fully registered before a bank letter can be ordered.

When ordering your letter, you'll need to include the full address of the bank you are applying to, as the letter needs to be addressed to them.

The details for your home and term-time address are taken from NottinghamHub, so check these are up to date, taking care to include your room or flat number.

Bank letters are sent by email. Most banks will let you upload the document online, while some may ask you to print it and take it into a branch. It’s best to check what your chosen bank requires before you apply.

Apply for a Council Tax exemption

If you are a full-time student at the University of Nottingham, you may not need to pay council tax. If you are studying part-time, you are not eligible for a council tax exemption and we will not be able to provide a letter.

Who needs a letter?

If you live in university halls of residence, you are automatically exempt and don’t need to do anything.

If you live in one of the local authority areas listed below, the University will automatically update them once you are fully registered so you do not need to request a letter:

  • Broxtowe Borough Council
  • Derby City Council
  • Erewash Borough Council
  • Gedling Borough Council
  • North West Leicestershire District Council
  • Nottingham City Council
  • Rushcliffe Borough Council

If you live outside of these areas, you may still be eligible for an exemption and can request a council tax letter from us.

Other situations

If someone else (for example, a parent) needs proof of your student status for a council tax discount, please request a student status letter instead.

If you are a postgraduate research student, you will usually remain eligible for a discount until you submit your thesis. Once you have submitted your thesis for examination, you will no longer be eligible.
